BIG RAPIDS – Barrett Jones, a senior at Ferris State University, attended a media and video camp with the Bismark Larks, a baseball team made up of college players and a member of the Northwoods League. Jones, from Alpena, is on track to graduate in December, with a degree in sports communications and a minor in multimedia journalism.
He said his internship experience was very beneficial.
“I know the title says media and video, but I’ve had the opportunity to learn about many other aspects of the sports industry,” he said. “At Bismarck, I got to experience summer league baseball, which is not a college sport at Ferris. I was able to create content with a lot of “creative freedom”, and there was a ton of support to follow through on my ideas. Besides creating content, as interns we are asked to go out and talk to companies for the benefit of other departments in the organization. It allowed me to see how important the baseball team is to the community. I think that’s one of the reasons I went to North Dakota, to impact people’s time at the stadium and capture it.
He explained his future plans.
“Beyond my last semester, I plan to work another season as a videographer at Ferris before starting my career somewhere in the sports industry,” Jones said. “I haven’t figured out where I want to work after this school year, but I know I want to work in sports. The idea of a graduate school is still floating around, but I think after this pandemic, the idea of ending school will be so rewarding. I understand that the opportunity to say that I have completed my graduate studies would set me apart from other job applicants. Still, I believe I can create that separation with my work ethic and my attitude. “
He has advice for others.
“You have to work to find the internship,” he says. “An internship offer rarely offers a ground in your front step, so it’s good to go to career fairs, network and create a way for employers to find you.
“Another important point is to determine what you want to get out of these internships. For example, I know I love football, but I have never had any experience creating content for a baseball organization. Therefore, I wanted to explore the baseball industry so I knew that once I graduated I would have a better idea of where I wanted to go. You have to become a volume shooter when it comes to applying for internships. Leave no stone unturned in creating options for your experience in the field of your choice.
