FOM Considered An Anime Series To Engage With Younger Fans

Formula One Management considered the idea of commissioning an animated F1-related children’s TV show to help appeal to younger audiences.

FOM’s Director of Media Rights and Content Creation, Ian Holmes, explained how FOM was looking to expand the sport’s fanbase beyond winning new audiences through the Netflix documentary Drive to Survive during a keynote at the BlackBook Motorsport Forum in London on Wednesday.

“Essentially, we want people to engage with our sport in the way that they want to,” Holmes said. “We want to make sure that our offer is as wide as possible.

“Drive to Survive has been a really successful pillar of that, but we also want to engage with kids, for example. We want to do an animated series. We want to do something in the travel business or whatever. else – it must have a Formula 1 connection.

“But essentially we want as many different touchpoints as possible for the sport. So we need to make sure that, content-wise, what we put out — beyond and around Drive to Survive — engages with the fans who come from that direction.

Krack surprised rivals aren’t scrubbing racing tires

Aston Martin team principal Mike Krack is puzzled that the other nine Formula 1 teams are not following their tire cleaning tactics for races this season.

The team regularly sends drivers Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll to perform slow laps on new tires to get them ready for races. Krack says the team will continue to use this approach for the rest of the season.

“We do it because we think it’s the right thing to do,” Krack said. “Why others don’t, you have to ask them. But it’s a good observation that we do. For us, we think it is better that we continue to do so.
