On Wednesday June 30, British contemporary artist Philip Colbert will unveil CITY OF LOBSTEROPOLIS, his first fully digital exhibition, opening in Decentraland’s âmetaverseâ – seeing the artist’s lobster universe evolve in its latest iteration. It is the most ambitious and largest single artist venture ever seen at Decentraland to date.
An open source virtual reality world built on the Ethereum Blockchain, Decentraland is a place to explore and experience through a unique avatar, or even create your own piece of the universe. Located on 57 plots of land in the Lobster Land district, Lobsteropolis City is partnered with Vegas City, one of the largest districts in the Decentraland metaverse.
âForget cubism, it’s artistic expression and experience on another level. With the rise of NFT, the digital art movement is now a tidal wave, and so many new ideas are possible. Never before has a generation been able to change artistic possibilities so radically, this is the perfect storm. For me, Decentraland was the best second life platform to host Lobsteropolis.
Curated by world-renowned auctioneer and art dealer Simon de Pury at the Lobster Land Museum, the exhibition includes a series of NFT works available exclusively with the NFT SuperRare platform. These include the emblematic past works of Colbert Cryptofixation and Lobster fountain, alongside new unpublished NFT works.
On the occasion of the opening of LOBSTEROPOLIS CITY, an event will take place at the Lobster Land Museum, Simon de Pury will also host his first Decentraland auction. At the heart of the auction is a new NFT artwork created in collaboration with legendary American New Wave band DEVO – a hybrid artwork and musical performance titled LOB-STER DE-VO.
âWe are currently living and working in interesting times for the art world, which has finally fully integrated the digital world. It has been so much fun to appear as an avatar in Philip Colbert’s thrilling lobster universe.
Simon de Pury
In this work, Colbert further explores the role that digital ideology plays in the rebirth of a more digitally oriented era for humanity, and the defining role that art plays in this era – while at the same time making reference to the use of 3 crucifixions in DEVO’s iconic music video “Through being cool” in 1981.
DEVO will also perform a live DJ set at the Lobster Land Records store next to the museum for the launch event on June 30.
â’LOB-STER-DE-VO’ Charting our way into the future. To liberate oneself. In search of new traditions. Of- the evolution is real!
Gerald Casale, DEVO
Colbert has built Lobsteropolis City over the past three years, with composite elements appearing in international museum exhibitions and through gaming, video and virtual reality platforms. These include its 2020 exhibition at the Saatchi Gallery, which opened with a lobster robot launch only in response to the Covid-19 pandemic, and Lobster Land at the Modern Art Museum in Shanghai. This new project therefore marks a logical evolution in Colbert’s innovative and continuous engagement with the digital possibilities of art.

Devo is an American rock band from Akron, Ohio, formed in 1973. One of the most innovative groups of the New Wave, formed in Akron, Ohio, in 1972 by Kent State art students Gerald Casale and Mark Mothersbaugh.
With their synergistic blend of electronic rock, unprecedented theatrical performances and groundbreaking music videos directed by Devo co-founder Gerald Casale, they have created a multimedia artistic assault that resonates in contemporary 21st century pop culture.
Devo gets its name from its concept of ‘devolution’ – the idea that instead of evolving, humanity has actually regressed, as evidenced by the dysfunction and herd mentality of American society. Their music echoed this view of society as rigid, repressive and mechanical, with appropriate touches – jerky, robotic rhythms; an obsession with technology and electronics (the group were among the first non-Prog rock groups to make the synthesizer a central element); often atonal melodies and chord progressions – all of which have been filtered through the perspectives of the geek misfits. Devo became a cult sensation, helped in part by their simultaneous emphasis on highly stylized visuals, and briefly broke into mainstream audiences with the single “Whip It,” whose accompanying video was made staple by the MTV network. nascent.
